Redwood Cloning

Recently in New York Times, there was a piece of the cloning of giant red woods over 500 years old in order to start soaking up all of the carbon dioxide that has built up in our atmosphere, there are huge amounts of carbon dioxide that are processed in these massive trees and some think that this will be one of the best ways to clean it all up. The cloning puts engineering and science to the test but it has humanitarian benefits. I found this to be particularly important to my subject matter and really does show how the two fields are connected and when they are the benefits than can be reaped by our mother earth.

I recently went to the Florida Department of Environmental Protections and got a first hand look at what is being done currently to preserve the wetlands of Florida. While there I was intrigued to find that many of the engineers have the same ideas as many humanitarians and despite the number of people who think otherwise, really are working for a greater good and for the health of the earth rather than just to follow codes of the state. It was a great experience over all and of all the research I did, this was the most beneficial and helpful and gleaned a lot of light on my subject matter and helped me get a better understanding for the connectedness between humanitarian efforts to help save the environment and Environmental engineers alike to do the same.

Humanitarian Efforts

Many humanitarian groups world wide are working towards getting our world on track as far as the environment is concerned. In many cases we are having to work very hard and diligently to undo what effects generations before us have caused. I found a great webiste that is mainly human based, but they do some humanitarian exposés about helping our environment. The website is here!

They recently did a piece on the new project the United Nations came up with to name 2011 the international year of the forest! Here's a link to their website to watch a great video on the matter and also how you can get involved.
